Elshan Gambarov was born in Baku, Azerbaijan. He started playing soccer when he was 8 years old. Between ages 10-15, he attended Soccer School of Youth and became 4-time champion of the city. At the age of 15, he participated in Junior Championship of USSR for Hazar (Baku) team and became the champion as well as a bombardier of this match, scoring 9 goals. During his professional soccer career, Elshan played in the following teams: Taraggi (Baku), Araz (Baku), Neftchi (Baku), Anji (Makhachkala), Dynamo (Makhachkala), Turan (Tauz), Navbahor (Uzbekistan), Dynamo (Samarkand), Yessil’ Bogatir’ (Kazakhstan), Kyapaz (Gyandja, Azerbaijan), Simurg (Zagatali, Azerbaijan), and Olympic (Baku). From 1998-2001, Elshan played for the National Azerbaijan Team in European Championship games. While playing for Neftchi, he participated in a qualification round of the Champion League and UFA Cup. In addition, he became a 3-times champion of the country, a bronze medalist, a 2-times winner of the National Cup, and in 2005, a silver cup winner of Community Champions of SNG. While playing for Turan, he became a silver medalist; in Navbahor, a bronze medalist and a winner of Uzbekistan Cup; in Dynamo, he participated in Championship Cup of Asia. In years 1999, 2002, 2004, and 2005, Elshan was the champion of Azerbaijan. Elshan Gambarov’s successful soccer career has been noted for his hard work, his dedication to training, and the love for the sport. His greatest achievements were possible not only due to his strong character and his persistence, but also because of the greatest coaches who took him under their wings. His appreciation goes out to the following brilliant former soccer players: Kazbek Tuayev- a distinguishing coach of Azerbaijan, Sergei Kramarenko, Vagif Sadihov, T. Agamuradov – distinctive coaches of Turkmenistan, L. Ostrovushka – a distinctive coach of Kazakhstan, and H. Fuzaijlov.
